Giving language to our emotions helps us to formulate plans and solve problems. However, when we get hooked by self-doubt, shame, fear, and anger we then treat these thoughts and emotions as facts.
Viktor Frankl (author of Man's Search for Meaning) claims that "everything can be taken from a man/woman but one thing: to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's way."
According to Frankl,
"between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our
power to choose our response, in our response lies our growth and our
freedom."
If we make the choice and go towards discomfort, we are then able to adapt and align our actions with our values. Emotionally agile people know how to adapt and align their actions with their values, ultimately leading to powerful change.
At the Round Table, we will discuss four (4) steps that we can bring to our coaching to increase emotional agility.
